Good Managers Make A Difference … Great Managers Are Trained
I have been part of a fair share of businesses in the last 30 years. 95% of them have Managers that are great technically and probably that’s why they have been promoted. However little or no investment has gone into their training. The result? A bunch of Managers that cannot manage their employees which leads to the biggest flaw in your business. Untrained managers can lead to:
- Poor morale
- High attrition
- Disputes and tribunals
- Disciplinaries and Grievances (that they also won’t be trained on)
- Stressed Managers
- CEO and directors having to manage their people (have you really got time?)
It isn’t fair to your managers if they haven’t been trained and then give them a team of people. It’s like someone putting a learner driver into a sports car and asking them to drive on a motorway. Disaster! Like anyone in an impossible situation your managers become stressed, defensive and avoid situations making things much worse.
Some employees will take advantage of this and not perform, behave badly or have high levels of absence because no one is dealing with it. Happy days for the employees. stressful days for the Managers… very expensive for the business.
In the period of January to March 2025, Employment Tribunal claims in the UK saw a significant increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Specifically, there were 491,000 outstanding claims, which is an increase of 48,000 from the previous year. A lot of tribunal claims are due to poor handling of disputes or poor morale in the workplace. The introduction of “day one” rights in employment law, particularly the right to claim unfair dismissal from the first day of employment, is expected to lead to a significant increase in employment tribunal cases. Other “day one” rights, like those related to family leave and sick pay, are also likely to contribute to this rise. In 2025, the maximum compensatory award for unfair dismissal in UK employment tribunals increased to £118,223-, or one-year’s gross pay.
It doesn’t have to be like this. I can train Managers on a number of subjects:
- Performance Management
- Managing Disciplinaries and Grievances
- Managing challenging conversations (human nature makes us avoid these but they need to happen and save going to disciplinary)
- Managing Absence
- How to conduct effective Appraisals and reviews
- Managing Diversity and Dignity in the workplace
Is there something else that they need training on? let me know and we can make it happen. In fact, let’s make training your managers happen and see the difference.
